After San Antonio, our next big stop was Tucson, AZ. If you're not quite sure the distance between the two, let me tell you because I know it well. Try 13 hours. That's right. These two girls drove 13 hours through the desert....and it actually wasn't that terrible. Sure our tushies were numb by the time we got to Arizona but the desert on this drive was not what we expected. It was gorgeous and mountainous. but still very dry... lots of sagebrush. Lots of cactus everywhere. We were however pleased with the speed limit out there. That's the first time I've ever driven 90 mph (at least legally...just kidding, Mom!)
We did stop about every 4 hours for gas and to stretch but there is not a lot of excitement going on in this region of the US so we kept moving. We like to refer to this drive as "Straight Corollin'" (get it??? cause we are driving a Corolla...ooookkk.) This massive drive also reminded me of how big God is and how small we are. The vastness of this desert really made me think about how much bigger the world really is than my own little everyday life. We all need this reminder sometime. God is SO big...he provides for plants and animals and even the few brave souls that chose to live in this huge nothingness of land just like He provides for you and I everyday. He's too good to us and the drive reminded me to be thankful for the little things like friends, family, convenience, and of course...air conditioning!!! (I already thank Him every day for that last one anyway.)
The times zones changed during this drive and Arizona doesn't recognize Daylight Saving Time so we actually ended up gaining two hours of time back which was lovely. We stopped in town at Renee's Organic Oven for dinner where Rebecca and I proceeded to devour an entire appetizer and almost a whole pizza. Driving makes you super hungry if you weren't already aware.
Next came the yet another crazy, wonderful hotel that we found a deal on. We stayed at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon. This is a gated resort with valet and in-suite check-in. We didn't even know what to do with ourselves but laugh. We were looking rough after that crazy drive and we rolled up to a five star resort to stay. Those people were probably thinking "who is this riff raff?" haha But our room was amazing! HUGE and again like an apartment, our own balcony, a claw foot tub, robes, a kitchen and a giant pillow top bed. We were is heaven! Then when we saw the usual room rate on the back of the door, we were beyond pumped that we only paid $79.00. (See pic below)
The time change thing got to us and we ended up going to bed at 10pm there time. You can be sure it was our best night of sleep yet though!
