Day 10: Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Wednesday morning we enjoyed a lovely breakfast courtesy of the Pima Inn & Suites (and by lovely I mean slightly questionable...but still free!) After checking out, we headed into town in Scottsdale to check out the sites and shops.  It's a cute little town, and like most towns we drove through or stayed in Arizona, it's basically a small city in the middle of the desert.  If you get back on the main highway and drive, in about 10 minutes it would be desert again and about two hours later, another little town.  This whole concept just keeps blowing our minds.

We ate lunch at a local cafe called the Daily Dose and it was here that we had Breakfast Nachos.  This will go on the list of top ten best decisions made on this voyage.  If you ever go to Scottsdale, AZ, make this restaurant a stop on your list!

Across the street from the cafe is Old Town Scottsdale.  This area of town looks similar to an old western town, complete with wagon wheels and adobe huts, but it's now completely occupied by local shops and boutiques and of course, eateries.  We walked around in this area for several hours checking out the culture and artwork and buying souvenirs.

It was here that we experienced the craziest heat wave of all times (slight - and I mean very slight - exaggeration).  The Lord knew I was not made for 117 degree temperatures, which is why he placed me on the east coast.  (He did however give me the wrong type of hair for the kind of humidity we have in NC, but that's another story...)  We handled the heat ok - it was mostly just really different.  No humidity but so intense that your skin almost hurt when you walked outdoors.  Just craziness...

From there we drove on to Sedona, AZ - a small tourist town between Phoenix and Flagstaff.  We loved it there!  Shops and trails and sites to see everywhere.  We stayed at the Desert Quail Inn (if you didn't know, quails are apparently a big deal in Arizona) which was nice because it was family owned and seemed really personable like back home.

We grabbed a quick bite to eat at the Marketplace Cafe where we enjoyed live music and then headed back to the room to plan a little.  We both wanted to cry this night because we were having such a time finding a safe, clean, close hotel to stay in for our first stop in California, but finally we just said Jesus take the wheel and called it a night.
